The Witching Hour

Well the withching hour is almost upon us. Halloween is my favorite holiday and I have no plans this year. Oh well.

For a little fun, after work I drove around my neighborhood and took pictures with people's yard decorations. Inflatable pumpkins, graveyards, witches in trees, etc. Unfortunately the sun was starting to set so some of the pics were blown out. And I got some odd looks from my neighbors. LOL

What I Wore While Stalking Yard Decor:

2009-10-30 combo

  • jeans ("curvy" Gap)
  • black v-neck T (swap)
  • grey vest (Goodwill)
  • black cropped jacket (Newport News)
  • silver/black chain necklace (local charity shop)
  • black earrings (Ross?)
  • black fishnet trouser socks (Lane Bryant)
  • black flats (Simply Vera via Kohls)
  • cotton bracelet (handmade by Maria)
  • leather/silver cuff (via Ross)

What I Ate That Was Better Than Usual:

2009-10-30 food

  • breakfast: cheesy egg, alternative bagel, 3 cuties
  • lunch: turkey Buddig sandwich, grape tomatoes, lite yogurt, apple
  • snacks: two bars, string cheese
  • dinner: chinese delivery *
* Usually when we order chinese, I get General Tso's Chicken, which is the worst thing on the menu. The last two times we've ordered chinese, I got chicken and snow peas instead. It's not fried! And with all the water chestnuts and snow peas, it's so much less meat. Maybe ordering chinese isn't a smart choice, but it's progress!

Exercise Update:

I talked to a doc about my ankle and was told that I needed to rest it for 6 weeks b/c I messed up the ligaments when I twisted it after falling down the stairs. This was particularly disappointing b/c I have been waiting to tell you all about something that I was supposed to start this week - ballet classes! AND someone gave me a treadmill last week, which hasn't even gotten to be used once by me b/c I sprained my ankle right before I was getting ready to get on it for the first time. So, no advanced hula hooping classes, no beginners ballet classes, and no treadmill.

Tina in a Tree

Recently a PR person from Marshall's contacted me and offered me a $25 giftcard to check out their new Fall fashions. I agreed since I used to shop there all the time and I loved it. It was my go-to place for inexpensive suits. I had a plan. I was going to take my giftcard and was not going to spend a penny over that.

Oh Marshalls, you sucked me in. I forgot how much good stuff I always find there. I walked out after spending not $25, but $150. LOL. I bought clothes, gadgets, and even a workout DVD. My favorite purchase was this sweater. It was just so nice to touch. I had to have it. And the shoes! Oh the shoes! They didn't have such a great shoe section when I used to shop there. They have so many designer brand names now. I had to avoid it altogether or I would have spent twice what I did.

I do have one complaint about the store. They were playing different music in The Cube section than they were playing in the rest of the store. But you could hear both in the entire store. It was really annoying.

What I Wore While Lounging on the Couch:

2009-10-28 combo

  • black/white dress (Goodwill)
  • dusty purple sweater* (Theory via Marshalls)
  • black tights (Target)
  • black loafers** (Liz Claiborne)
  • vintage key (antique store)
  • purple earrings (Ross?)

*I know it looks black, but it's a dark dusty purple.

What I Ate While Trying to Avoid Hangover Food:

2009-10-28 food

  • breakfast: 2 fried eggs with onions, alternative bagel w/ laughing cow, apple, grape tomatoes
  • lunch: buddig pastrami sandwich, brocolli slaw, 3 cuties
  • snack: banana, vanilla yogurt with cherries
  • dinner: baked potato with taco chicken, corn, avocado, sour cream, and cheese; side salad

Total for the Day: 29 points

Manual Labor in a Skirt

I'm still not working so I can be more causal, but I get bored just wearing jeans. So today I threw on a casual skirt. This is actually a skirt that I took to the swap, but no one claimed it. So I took it back home and it was one of the things that I dyed on Monday. I've been intrigued by the combo of grey and brown lately, so I decided to dye the background grey. It didn't come out as dark as I wanted. That how these things go. I paired it with some of the items I got from the swap. In fact, I'm going to be wearing a lot of my swap items in the next few posts, so keep an eye out for them.

What I Wore While Shoveling Gravel:

2009-10-27 combo

(Yes, I was actually shoveling gravel in this outfit. It wasn't planned. I went outside to close the garage door for Rand, and I just grabbed the shovel and filled in some holes in the driveway for about 15 minutes.)

  • grey/brown skirt, overdyed (Target)
  • grey tights (Target)
  • brown shirt (I've had it for years, I have no clue)
  • brown suede boots (SWAP!!)
  • silver tone earrings (SWAP!!)

I untucked the shirt during the day. I saw myself in a mirror at Target and decided the proportions were off with it tucked in.

What I Ate/Drank After Running Errands All Day Long:

2009-10-27 food

  • breakfast: fried egg sandwich, 2 cuties
  • snack: 19 rice crackers, no pudge brownie
  • dinner: smoked salmon sandwich, side salad, 4 beers, 1 tequila shot

I didn't eat lunch b/c I was out running errands and didn't get home until late afternoon. I usually carry fruit and bars in my purse, but I had taken them out in the morning. Silly Tina. I know I didn't eat enough; I'll do better tomorrow.

Total for the Day: 2 swapped items, 33.5 points

DIY Kind of Day

Monday was a DIY kind of day. First, I did three different dye baths: tan, grey, and hunter green. This -----> is my tan dye job. Did you know that if you dye things one at a time in the same dye bath, the color changes? For example, when I used the grey dye bath, I first dyed a slip and then a cami. They both started as the same color and fabric. But the slip was so much darker than the cami. It was a steel grey and the cami was a pale green grey. The same thing happened with my tan and green baths too. It's like each item you dye uses up the dye in the water, leaving just the liquid behind.

Anway, since I spent all day dyeing clothes and sewing, I looked like a bum, so no photos. I did stay fully on track foodwise, though. So I'll post those. I need some reinforcement to keep me motivated.

What I Ate While Dyeing Everything I Own:

2009-10-26 food

  • breakfast: cheesy egg, alternative bagel, two cuties, hot tea
  • lunch: chicken buddig sandwich with cheese, apple, brocolli slaw
  • snack: 2 no pudge brownies, 1 oz goat cheese
  • dinner: faux chicken parm, spaghetti squash, ghetto garlic stick

Total for the Day: no exercise (I sprained my ankle last Friday), 26 points

Clothing Swap Success

Erin and I had the Dallas Clothing Swap on Saturday and I am happy to report that it was a great success. 13 lovely women in all shapes and sizes showed up with massive amounts of clothing and accessories to be swapped. We had 3 big tables piled high with clothes, 1 with acessories, 1 with jewelry, and shoes piled on the floor:

CLothing Swap combo 1

And of course, we had some snacks to keep everyone fueled while they rummaged through the massive piles. We had cake balls (thanks, Erin!), chicken biscuits, hummas and veggies, plus white wine spritzers. I will say that most people seemed too occupied by the clothing to stop for food. We did a couple of rounds of selections, then we just let everyone grab whatever they wanted that was left.

CLothing Swap combo 2

Even after that, we still had 7 bags of clothing to donate to charity.

All in all, I would consider this a great success. Any of the other attendees care to put in their two cents? Thanks to all of you who came and made this such a fun event:

Clothing Swap Update - VENUE CHANGE!!

Please note: the location of the clothing swap has changed.

Due to an accidental doublebooking at our first location, we've had to move across the street. We will be in a conference room at

7800 Alpha Road
Dallas, TX 75240

If you don't see a sign pointing to our room, just ask at the front desk and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

I am so sorry for the last minute change. I can't wait to see you all there!

Don't forget to wear clothing that allows you to try on things in a communal environment. (I'm going to wear a tank top and leggings under a wrap dress, so I can just pull off the dress and try on the things over the tank and leggings.

Video Introduction from the Road

Per byHillary's request, here is my video introduction. It's a horrid camera angle since I was sitting in my car, so you get a great view of my double chin. And I really wish I didn't have car hair and that I had some lipstick on. But I thought it was so funny that Rand called me while I was filming, so I didn't bother to redo it.

How about you? Are you up for posting your own video introduction? I would love to see it!

BTW, I was stuck in that same spot on the highway for an hour and a half before checking the grassy area between the highway and the access road, putting my car in 4 wheel drive, and doing a little bit of off roading. It may sound like overkill to have checked the grass and to use 4 wheel drive, but it's been raining for weeks here in Texas. And after I got on the access road, I saw 3 cars all stuck in the mud from trying to get off the road the same way I did. And I would have felt like a real ass if I had gotten stuck in the mud just from being impatient.

Trip To Houston

As I mentioned earlier, I unexpectedly ended up with the entire week off, so I moved up a trip that I had planned for next week. I drove down to Houston to see a friend (Hi, Magnolia!) while she was in Texas visiting her mom (Hi, Pamela!). She had previoulsy mentioned that she really wanted me grey "curtain" skirt, so I decided that I needed to bring it to her. But clearly I needed to wear it one last time. So my traveling attire was a little dressier than normal.

What I Wore While Driving to Houston:

2009-10-21 combo

  • grey skirt (WDNY, Goodwill)
  • patterned peasant shirt (Goodwill)
  • grey stretch belt (Goodwill)
  • brown boots (Avenue)
  • grey earrings (Rainbow)

PS - I think I looked like a hippie witch.

Have Hoop, Will Travel:

You know I took my hoop to Houston with me and I persuaded both Magnolia and Pamela to take a turn with it. Boo-ya!!

Half Day At Home

The Powers That Be came into work today around noon and told us all to go home b/c the cases that we were working on had settled. Since I am a contract employee, that really sucks for my paycheck this week, but I relished my half day at home alone. It's been a long time since I've had some quiet time around the house to bum around, do chores, watch TV, etc. It was great.

Thank You, Goober!

Rand's Daily Outfit Assessment: "I don't like the pastel shirt with all that heavy grey and black." It's a blue skirt. "Okay fine. I don't like the pastel with all that grey and blue. It looks off."

While I don't agree with Rand's reasoning about why this outfit looks off, I do agree that it looks off. Looking at the picture, I think maybe it's that the jacket is a bit too big in the shoulders and the sleeves are a little too big. So it looks like I am swallowed up in a big blog of grey wool, rather than just sporting a funky grey suit jacket. I can't decide if it's worth it to me to get it tailored. I have a lot of suits, so I know how much it costs to get a jacket tailored. I could do the sleeves myself, but the shoulder repair would be expensive. Do I really want to shell out a ton of money for a jacket I bought at Goodwill. So you tell me (and be honest!): Is the jacket worth getting tailored?

What I Wore That Made Me Feel Shlumpy:

2009-10-13 combo

  • blue wool skirt, rolled at waist to be shorter (Goodwill)
  • pastel scarf worn as shirt (Goodwill)
  • black tank, not seen (Ross)
  • grey suit jacket (Goodwill)
  • pink pumps (Nine West)
  • faux pearl necklace and earrings (Ross?)
What I Ate That Was Stopped By an Email:

2009-10-13 food

I've mentioned several times over the last few weeks that I am really struggling to stay on the healthy track. I am really trying to get my focus back on healthy options more so than dieting and weightloss. But I've been hitting a few road bumps. Okay, a lot of road bumps. If the road bumps were Little Debbies and McDonald's chicken sandwiches. sigh. Yesterday, as I was staring at the POUND of Twizzlers that I was almost through consuming (breakfast and snack, thank you), I got an email from Heather aka Goober. The topic? Healthy lifestyles. She saved my day. I really was sitting at my desk trying to figure out if I could stop and get a McChicken sandwich on my way home without Rand finding out. And then after our email chat, I didn't do it. I would have been too embarassed. So thank you, Heather. You pulled me back into the healthy eating zone. And I needed it.
  • breakfast: Twizzlers
  • lunch: buddig sandwich, snap peas, string cheese
  • snack: more Twizzlers
  • dinner: lemon pepper chicken, oven roasted new potatoes and brocolli
  • dessert: english toffee crunch bar (Weight Watchers)

Don't forget about the birthday giveaway.

Hooping Video Star

After work today, Sarah (of hula hooping fame) took Rand and I out for dinner for our birthday. We had a great time. Lots of good convo and good food. Plus, she's such a sweety that she bought me a digital food scale after seeing it on my wish list here. Man, why didn't I say that I wanted $1M?? LOL Thanks, Sarah! You rock.

What I Wore for My First Birthday Celebration:

2009-10-12

  • dress (handmade, Goodwill)
  • brown belt (Ross)
  • brown boots (via Avenue)
  • stone earrings (hand-me-down from Magnolia)
  • red and brown necklace (Ashley Stewart)

2009-10-12 food

  • breakfast: blueberry fritter
  • lunch: chicken sandwich, snap peas, cuties
  • snack: Clif bar, string cheese, banana
  • dinner: veggie pad thai, peach sticky rice

What Actually Goes on in Hula Hoop Class:

If I had know that the instructor's assistant was filming us, I might have actually done some hooping to begin with. Instead you get some nice video of me swinging my hoop back and forth while I try to figure out the hand grip on a new trick.

(That's me in the white shirt)

Don't forget to enter my birthday giveaway! Seriously, even if you never leave a comment, don't be shy.

Birthday Giveaway Bonanza

Rand and I are celebrating our 35 birthdays this week. Mine is Friday and his is Saturday. (Yep, I am an older woman.) In honor of our birthdays, I am having two giveaways this week. Since my blog is about fashion, food, and fitness, the giveaways are going to incorporate those three things as well.

Giveaway #1 - For Rand's Birthday:

  • fashion: Carolina Herrera silk scarf
  • food: some of my favorite bar
  • fitness: Dance & Get Fit Cardio Funk workout DVD

Giveaway #2 - For Tina's Birthday:

  • fashion: Vera silk scarf
  • food: some of my favorite bars
  • fitness: Dance and Be Fit Brazilian Body

Leave a comment to enter the giveaway. I'll pick two winners on Friday.

Ride 'em, Cowboy!

I liked my outfit so much today, that I had to do a weekend post. I tried on these jeans and realized that even though they fit now and are comfortable, they're really tighter than I want to wear. Then it struck me - was it even remotely possibly that I, who can never even find boots that fit my huge muscular calves, could possibly shove these tight jeans into a pair of boots? No way, I thought, but I had to try. And they did!! WHOOO HOOO!!!!

Rand's Daily Outfit Assessment: "You look like you should be riding a horse." I have to agree with that. Instead I went out to eat champagne brunch. Yummy goodness.

What I Wore to Sunday Brunch:

2009-10-11 combo

  • jeans (Lane Bryant)
  • brown wedge boots (Cloudwalkers via Avenue)
  • brown tweed plaid jackets (Lane Bryant)
  • maroon long sleeve T (Old Navy)
  • bronze necklace (borrowed from Maria)
  • bronze earrings (gift from aunt)

Hidden Weekly Theme

All my outfits this week had two things in common. Did anyone notice what they were?

UPDATE

Answer: grey skirts and pink belts

Thanks for all the guesses. That was fun!

A Slip of the Slip

I threw on a slip under my outfit today b/c the shirt is sheer and the skirt is unlined. Man, was that a mistake! I should have just worn a tank under the skirt like I usually do. Every time I sat down my slip stuck out from the bottom os my skirt. I look like an idiot for most of the day. Oh well.

What I Wore While Cursing At My Slip:

2009-10-08 combo

  • plaid skirt (Newport News)
  • polka dot shirt (Target)
  • pink belt (Walmart)

Belt Free Week Challenge Roundup

Rand's Challenge Assessment: (this convo took place on Thursday night). I'm doing a week without belts. Fist pump from Rand. "I'm glad you finally listened to me." About what? "About belts making you look like a barrel." stunned slience from me "You know, because the belt makes a horizontal band around your middle just like the bands on a barrel." uh.... "And you know how horizontal stripes are bad.." Wait, are you saying that belts make me look fat?? "uh..." I think we should end this conversation before you make me self concious about belt, which I love and I think look really good on me. "Okay."

So as you can see, Rand really approved of this challenge. LOL

belt free week

Now here are my assessments:
  • I tucked my shirts into my skirts, which I don't normally do
  • i selected layering items that buttoned at the waist or in some other way cinched in my waist
  • not wearing belts can be a lot more comfortable
  • I missed my belts, but maybe I can cut down on them some

Tough, Smart Lawyer

I'm sure you have similar ads where you live, but here in Dallas we have a couple of well known legal commercial: the Texas Hammer and The Tough, Smart Lawyer. Well since I had to meet a pro bono client today, I didn't do casual Friday. And I thought that I should do my "tough, smart lawyer" pose. The cat hair stuck to my knee doesn't really add to my toughness and if I had really been smart, I wouldn't have kneeled down to pet the cats right before taking my pics. Ha!

What I Wore While Being Tough:

2009-10-02 combo

  • black slacks (Lane Bryant)
  • striped blouse (via Ross)
  • grey vest (Lane Bryant)
  • satin flats (via Kohls)
  • grey necklace (Rainbow)

What I Ate While Cursing the Post Office For Closing an Hour Earlier Than I Thought:

2009-10-02 food

Rand and I ran out to the post office at 5 today. He needed to return a gift he bought for me (wrong size - way too small, bless his heart) and I needed to mail some DVDs to Sam like I have been promising for 3 weeks now. I thought the post office was open until 6, but it actually closed at 5. Ugh. Back again tomorrow. So we drowned our sorrows in some beer and gumbo.

  • breakfast: cheesy egg, bagel, and cuties
  • lunch: buddig sandwich, snap peas, apple, cheese
  • snack: Clif Z bar
  • dinner: Widmer beer, chicken and sausage gumbo

Family Love

Rand and I babysat for his niece. Man, does she love me. It's crazy and sweet. We had to take quite a few photos before we got one without her in it. She wouldn't leave the brooch on my jacket alone, and she kept trying to walk around in my heels. She's not even 2 years old. She's going to be quite the fashionist when she grows up.

What I Wore While Babysitting:

  • taupe skirt (Target)
  • cream shell (M Studio)
  • tweed jacket (Target)
  • cream leaf brooch (Etsy)
  • blue/green plaid pumps (Discount Shoe Store)
  • green silk scarf (Goodwill)

What I Ate on My New Froggie Plate:

I picked up this frog Crate & Barrel plate at Goodwill when I was looking for a set of smaller plates for Rand and I (we're trying to cut down on our portion sizes). I couldn't resist it, so I got it for lunches at work. It made me smile.

  • breakfast: scrambled egg with laughing cow, 2 cuties, alternative bagel
  • lunch: buddig sammie, apple, cheesestick, carrot
  • snack: thinkOrganic bar
  • dinner: brisket meal (Dickies BBQ)
