Hangin' in the Breeze

I don't know if I've let anything slip previously that might have clued you in, but I'm a little green aruond the edges. Maybe it comes from living in Austin for 10 years of my life, or if it's b/c my mom is a major DIY kinda girl, or what. But I like to recycle, reuse, repurpose, upcycle, and do what I can that is a little more enviro friendly, esp if it helps my budget! That's why I carry my own water with me, eat my oatmeal from old glass mayo jars, why I started making my own laundry soap and more recently my own windex (no more buying plastic bottles!). And then after talking about it for several months, we finally started hanging our laundry out to dry. Rand took this picture and sent it to me at work to show me that even though he wasn't sure about it, he was giving the clothesline an honest try. It put a huge smile on my face (although I am not sure what our duplex neighbors think about it.) Next up ... backyard chickens!!! (A girl can dream.)

What I Wore While Our Sheets Dried in the Sun:

(Squinty McKee has made a return. Isn't she lovely?)
  • white ruched wrap shirt (Newport News)
  • black "mexican" skirt (Lane Bryant)
  • black satin ballet flats (via Kohls)
  • orange wooden bead necklace (Fossil, thrifted Goodwill)
  • white shell cuff bracelet (H&M)
  • black/white cameo screwback earrings (vintage store in Austin?)

What I Ate After Finally Deciding I was a Tiny Bit Hungry:

(I'm having problems with my foods pics. I'll try to upload later tonight.)

Rand and I kept going back and forth about wheather we wanted to eat dinner. He had a late lunch and I was starving when I came home so I shoved a bunch of crackers with neufchatel and fig preserves into my mouth. Yum! But not very healthy. We finally had some leftover mojo pork roast and roasted brocolli. I had a truly tiny portion.

Total for the Day: 1947 calories, 1/2 mile walk

I make our laundry powder too :) We're about to buy a little farm and I can't stop thinking about the clothes line, chickens, garden and all those fabulous things!

I love that skirt!

I'm planning on putting a clothesline in my backyard soon so I can start drying my laundry outside. It saves energy, helps clothes last longer, and saves money, so I've got nothing to lose :)

i really like this look. something about it is just so casual, but chic. it's very eye-catching. my words are failing me now so maybe i should just say this outfit makes me go BOOMPS!

I have similar earrings, but with a pink background instead of black.

And I want backyard chickens, too! Or honeybees.

I agree- very relaxed and chic look!

I've never tried making my own cleaning supplies- how do you make a window cleaner?

I like this look on you, especially the skirt.

Drying clothes outside is very common in the UK, which is a bit strange as the weather is so cr*ppy. Many a time, my husband and I would sit down to lunch, only to have to rush outside to bring in the washing when it started to rain. But tumble dryers are (often) very small in Britain, so sheets for a double bed would take forever.

I love the outfit because the black and white looks so crisp!

My problem is that all I can think about now is crackers, neufchatel, and fig preserves. Yum!

I am cracking up at how awesome you look in your outfit while hanging out laundry. When I'm doing laundry I always wait until I have nothing wearable left, so am likely to be wearing something truly hideous.

Thanks for some great green budget-friendly ideas!

Ally - how do you like the powder? We've always made the liquid. Your farm sounds fabulous! Have fun with it!

Diana - thanks. And I wholeheartedly agree! I felt a little weird since we share a year, but so far no comments about it. We try to take it down as soon as the clothes are dry.

eednic - thanks! Plus it was comfortable! Always a bonus.

Kasmira - pin ksounds really lovely. I've never thought about honey bees. I don't I would know where to start. Since my parents have a ranch, I at least have some exposure to chickens.

Jess - thanks! Here is the recipe that we used. http://grocerycartchallenge.blogspot.com/2008/11/grocery-cart-challenge-recipe-swap_20.html

D'Rae - thanks! I love wrap blouses too. So flattering.

Struggler - I spent a summer living in Oxford, and there are many aspects of life in the UK that I would love to incorate here - hanging laundry, smaller fridges, etc.

Tracy - hahahah! Give me a year and we'll see.

Dana - thanks! It was delish, esp since the fig preserves were homemade by a friend of a friend.

Crabby - thanks for stopping by (I LOVE your blog). I usually do laundry when I run out of underwear. Ha. But I have so many clothes that I never run out of clean clothes. That doesn't stop me from proclaiming that I nothing to wear, though.

Erin - thanks! Squinty McKee needs to remember to wear her sunnies when taking photos so that her eyes don't scare off the readers. hehehe
