Thank You, Goober!

Rand's Daily Outfit Assessment: "I don't like the pastel shirt with all that heavy grey and black." It's a blue skirt. "Okay fine. I don't like the pastel with all that grey and blue. It looks off."

While I don't agree with Rand's reasoning about why this outfit looks off, I do agree that it looks off. Looking at the picture, I think maybe it's that the jacket is a bit too big in the shoulders and the sleeves are a little too big. So it looks like I am swallowed up in a big blog of grey wool, rather than just sporting a funky grey suit jacket. I can't decide if it's worth it to me to get it tailored. I have a lot of suits, so I know how much it costs to get a jacket tailored. I could do the sleeves myself, but the shoulder repair would be expensive. Do I really want to shell out a ton of money for a jacket I bought at Goodwill. So you tell me (and be honest!): Is the jacket worth getting tailored?

What I Wore That Made Me Feel Shlumpy:

  • faux pearl necklace and earrings (Ross?)
What I Ate That Was Stopped By an Email:

2009-10-13 food

I've mentioned several times over the last few weeks that I am really struggling to stay on the healthy track. I am really trying to get my focus back on healthy options more so than dieting and weightloss. But I've been hitting a few road bumps. Okay, a lot of road bumps. If the road bumps were Little Debbies and McDonald's chicken sandwiches. sigh. Yesterday, as I was staring at the POUND of Twizzlers that I was almost through consuming (breakfast and snack, thank you), I got an email from Heather aka Goober. The topic? Healthy lifestyles. She saved my day. I really was sitting at my desk trying to figure out if I could stop and get a McChicken sandwich on my way home without Rand finding out. And then after our email chat, I didn't do it. I would have been too embarassed. So thank you, Heather. You pulled me back into the healthy eating zone. And I needed it.
  • breakfast: Twizzlers
  • lunch: buddig sandwich, snap peas, string cheese
  • snack: more Twizzlers
  • dinner: lemon pepper chicken, oven roasted new potatoes and brocolli
  • dessert: english toffee crunch bar (Weight Watchers)

Don't forget about the birthday giveaway.

Hi, I've been following your blog for a while and I can identify with both the fashion and food journey. Good job with saying no to the McDonald's. I understand - I sneakily eat chips often. =(

Anyway, you always look great.

The jacket isn't too bad, but it isn't fabulous so I'd say don't spend the money. It's just my own rule but normally I'd only pay to alter a garment that was truly outstanding in some way - perhaps a unique fabric or unique vintage piece.

I do think the top is particularly sweet and the pinks complement your lovely skin tone.

Hope that helps. =)

I would try fixing the sleeves myself (maybe even three-quarter length) and then reevaluating. I would not pay to have something from Goodwill tailored unless I absolutely LOVED it.

Howdy - top is super cute, love the pearls, and of course - shoes are ultra cute. Jacket, honestly, not in total love with, but I do like the swoop collar. As with the previous comments above, unless you absolutely love it - don't spend the extra dollars to have it tailored.

The jacket is cute, but I don't think I would spend the money on it either. Especially if it's in need of a lot of work.

I think this outfit ages you a lot. I wouldn't bother with tailoring the jacket. I would just give it back to Goodwill, honestly. The wide collar makes you look really top heavy.

Maybe instead of tailoring the jacket, you can find ways to play with it a bit. Maybe over a sweater with jeans on a casual day, the jacket will make the look appear more polished, and the extra shoulder room will be great for an extra layer underneath. Or maybe if you play with it not buttoned, and instead belted. That may give some more defintion to the jacket, without you having to have it tailored.Or try rolling up the sleeves. The cuffed jacket look is in now anyways! I say play before you pay!!

I can sympathize with the food issues. For me its volume- I just cant always seem to listen to my body when it tells me I've had enough. Hang in there though! You've built some really great habits!

I would probably pass on the jacket- the swoop collar is always going to give it a big appearance on top, and it needs some serious tailoring to fit in the arms and shoulders. It's a cute design, but too big on you, which isn't such a bad thing!

You have such great style - I think you look fabulous.

I have a similar figure, but am a sewer so I tailor all my coats and jackets myself.

From a sewing point of view, the changes you suggest would take a while and therefore would be quite expensive.

Here's my guess - the wide shoulder creates an hour glass silhouette - so would need to balanced by a flared skirt, or at least something wide at the bottom to form the wide bottom of the hour glass - a pencil skirt creates a "figure 8" and needs to be balanced by a narrow shoulder line.

I have narrow shoulders so this outfit has really helped me to understand a balanced sihouette in action!

Ditch the jacket and either have the skirt taken up or ditch it too. It's impossible to feel hot with clothes that don't fit

i have to concur- the jacket isn't worth the effort. i think that in general for us bustier gals, double-breasted, especially with only one closure- is a tough look to pull off. a single-breasted blazer with two or three vertical buttons, top or top two buttoned, would emphasize your waist much better! i do love this top and the pearls, though...

Oh God, I love Twizzlers. I think I could totally eat them for breakfast everyday!

I agree, ditch the jacket. I do like the shawl collar, but it looks '80's to me with the double breasted buttons.

Hi, I can relate to a lot of your issues too and I love reading your blog (I'm from Australia, you're going Global!).

I think the jacket is nice but I'm not sure it suits your shape. It makes you look VERY big on top because of the wide collar and then the arms do look too big. Also because your skirt is dark, it recedes and looks smaller. So your top half looks bigger because your bottom half looks smaller (does that make sense?). It might work with a lighter flared skirt. Double breasted jackets don't tend to look great if you're a bit larger in the bust either.

Hope this helps. Thanks for making me smile!

Aw, I'm glad I helped. But I should really be thanking you! You took time out of your day to give me some really great advice and I really appreciate it. And it totally helped - I've eaten about 1/2 of what I ate yesterday, and most of it has been healthy choices! So thanks!

That top and the pearls are beautiful! Love the colors.

I think I would suggest passing on the jacket. I think you could find something that fits you better in the shoulders and sleeve length, and like others mentioned, a single-breasted style would probably be much more flattering on you - and that's not to knock your beautiful figure at all. I have the same problem - it's just a busty girl issue!

I think I'm with the others on the jacket - just not right for you.

Congrats on making a good health decision. It's not easy with so many tempting things around. Keep it up!

Agree....the jacket is nice, but just too big! Maybe you know someone else it would fit better?

Yes you are too small for this big coat!
I feel you on the staying on track healthy wise. It is so hard. I feel like somedays why do I bother? I have been at lifetime for almost 3 years and in those 3 years I have ACTIVELY tried to loose weight and have stayed exactly the same. For almost 3 years. I mean I shouldn't complain but it is FRUSTRATING..

OH AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Girl I should of known you were a Libra. Our birthdays are DAYS apart!

Everyone - Thanks for all the feedback on the jacket. I think the overall consensus is that I should get rid of it, but a few of you had some suggestions of things to try. So I think I will play with it a bit in my closet, and maybe wear it one more time to see if I can get it balanced for my figure. If I don't love it after that, I'll get rid of it. I really appreciate all the honesty and helpful comments. You guys are the best!

Michelle - Sneaky eating is the worst. I always feel so guilty.

Jess - I am a volume eater too. Sometimes my plate is 1/2 veggies just so I stuff a lot in.

ArkieStyleErin - Twizzlers are one of my favorite candies. sigh.

Vanessa - Australia?!? Awesome. I feel so special. Thanks for leaving a comment!

Heather - seriously, thank YOU!

BAM - thanks. I am trying to make those healthy decisions. It's such a struggle.

hillary - I noticed that we had close birthdays! It must be why we are both so fabulous!

I agree with everyone else that the jacket is too big and doesn't show off your curves - in contrast to many of your other lovely jackets! I have definitely been there with eating an entire bag of candy as a meal - it's great that you're able to set that aside and keep going!

No. The sleeves are too big, you need to take of those quaterback shoulders - and as you said it is going to cost too much - and I personally hate the hem, the way it makes this traingle shaped opening at your middle.

Now the neckline is great on you.

Grey is a great color, but IMO it requires some touch of color to not drag people down. A good red lipstick or a different top would have done the trick. Maybe red shoes - I know you have some -, because the beige ones don't really work either....
